Going Vegan and Other Things for 21 Days....

Wednesday, December 1, 2010.....

In several posts along the way, I've eluded to the fact that stress from being unemployed has taken a toll on me. It's hit me with insomnia, depression and for the past several months a horrible, horrible skin rash. Who knew that stress could trigger a person to have itchy skin? I didn't, until I thought I was losing my mind from all the scratching, mostly while I slept.

To make a long story short, I caved and went to a dermatologist when I could no longer stand the pain. I hate doctors. Not personally, but it seems that when I get sick, it's not a minor ailment, but often something off the beaten trail. Basically, I'm the person who makes up that one or two percent of the population who get the side effects (i.e., I have partial paralysis from Bell's Palsey which is rare).

While I was struggling with my rash (translation: fighting hubby about going to doctor), I (and my sister YogaGirl) noticed that I was sad. It was true for months, because of pain I could have controlled, I was depressed. I think it was a combo of pain + no sleep = glow glums. During this time, YogaGirl suggested I fast or cleanse because I've always had some sort of food sensitivity. She thought a cleanse would help me feel better. However, I wasn't mentally able to wrap my little mind around this concept.

Now, I am.

In fact, I'm feeling better (thank you Dr. dermatologist) and found a cleansing program that was more than just food. Granted, I have to give up alcohol, sugar, caffeine, gluten and animal products for 21 days, but this is just a stepping stone.

I read Kathy Freston's Quantum Wellness Cleanse book a.k.a. to me as the Quantum Leap Cleanse and liked what she had to say. She talked about the importance of exercise, expressing your emotions in a healthy manner, taking time out to put a smile on your face (this can be just singing in your car when alone), decluttering, meditating, etc...

I really think her book spoke to me because years ago, when I had money in my bank account, YogaGirl and I would escape this time of the year to Canyon Ranch where I ate healthy, worked out, pampered self with spa treatments, journaled a lot and really took the time to decompress and re-evaluate my life. I always ended up leaving refreshed and vowing to establish boundaries with work. Ummm...that usually lasted about 2 months.

I know I miss that. I can't afford Canyon Ranch, but for 21 days (which turns out to roughly be 0.13% of my total life so far on Earth) I can shake it up a bit.

It should be interesting because I'm a caffeine, animal product whore. I love my diet coke and believe butter is necessary when cooking.

To hold myself accountable during this process, I've decided to twitter my progress. If interested in following my journey, you can find me at Twitter user name is Joanie922orLMB.

Wow, congratulations to YOU! I hope it goes well, and that your husband is on board with it. Any time I try to cleanse, I usually end up giving up because he eats the usual stuff...but I have only tried the yoga class one that is liquid for 7 days. Maybe going vegan would make a difference to my success. I am sure this will make you feel great...it's sooo good for you. Good luck! (and I hope you keep us posted on here because I don't twitter so I'll miss that.)

Good luck LMB! It's hard I imagine to forego your favourites but I'm sure the results will be favourable. I didn't eat meat from the age of 14 until about two years ago when I gave in and ate some bacon. Even now I only have it maybe once a month if that so I'm pretty much almost vegetarian still. Not vegan though. I refuse to give up eggs and cheese. They're the point of life! :) But much of what I eat is vegan really and you can actually get some decent variety going too with eggless pastas and soy cheese sauces that make veggie lasagnas that taste as good as the original.

Hey 2011 will be a good year!

I've been thinking of doing a cleanse too. Or at least just cutting out meat for a while. Of course, then I have to remind myself I don't like following through on things...

Good luck!

I am so excited that you decided to take my suggestion and try a cleanse. I think if nothing else it will introduce you to some new foods which is always fun. Although I question the purchase of the caffeine free diet soda...LOL. But if that makes the rest of it easier, so be it.

Here's a recipe from my friend Stephanie's blog - maybe that will help you with your breakfast issues. The site is pretty good - all of it vegetarian, much of it vegan or gluten free.

Good luck!

p.s. are you sure you didn't say Freegan for 21 days? LOL

Andrea - I actually cooked for him last night and it didn't phase me. I think because I was tired and didn't care. But odd to cook and not taste what you're cooking along the way.

Veg Ass - Recommendations on the soy cheeses. I tried Daiya cheddar yesterday, and it's good, but doesn't really melt. Finding veggie meat without gluten is tough. Tofu and Soy milk scare me, but trying the milk today in protein shake and tofu this weekend.

Brian - Day 1 was easy, but had so much on plate yesterday, the day flew by. I think by end of Day 3 it'll hit me what I'm doing and I'll be able to do more meditating and other parts of the cleanse I am really looking forward to.

Kelly - I will

Logical Libby - This made me laugh because it's so true. Typically, I can do something when not paying attention, but once I set my mind to it, everything goes out the window.

DB - I'll check out the recipe and thought of making a potato/onion/brussel sprout hash.

Ummm...can you say no to going Freegan for 21 days..

I hope you are doing well with the cleanse and that you are noticing a difference in your mood. My son has done a few cleanses and it has been good for him.

I'm pretty sure that I would die if I tried that cleanse, but I am wishing you the best of luck. And hope that this gives you relief and a part of your self back.

I'm definitely going to follow your twitter journey!

TechnoBabe - I've noticed a bit more energy, a little bit more clarity and calmness. But, I'm thinking the meditation and journaling are helping with that.

Spot - I've actually made some great meals, but trust me, I am a carnivore at heart and have been craving a bacon, egg and cheese sandwich for DAYS....
