Facebook

Saturday, February 28, 2009...

I admit it. I've been sucked into Facebook, but it took me awhile to be sucked in the way others have been.

Initially, I would post a status update, loved seeing what old friends were up to, but really used it for one of its gaming applications. I admit, I sometimes am a game addict. However, recently things changed.

A childhood friend posted pictures from class trips from 6th and 8th grade. This started the game of guess the trip or the classmate. I have to admit, I didn't recognize myself in one picture (in my defense, prior to puberty, makeup and tweezers).

I didn't really think I was becoming addicted until last night. I had a dream that random people from my past were at my wedding. One was hanging out on the building overhang using a miroplane grater and a bar of soap. In my dream, this individual was grating soap whenever anyone walked under him --- he was trying to create an imaginary snowstorm. How bizarre is that?

Another FB friend is a reggae musician and he brought a musical instrument with him. I don't know why, but he thought everyone would love it. They did.

I wish I could say I drank too much or had something odd for dinner, but I didn't.

Rant and Rave Wednesday

Wednesday, February 25, 2009....

If it's Wednesday, it must be Rant and Rave day. Without further adieu, here my Rants and Raves for the past week:

Rave --- Seeing Kathy Griffin in concert. My sister treated me to Kathy Griffin tickets last Thursday in NYC. She was awesome! The show was sold out and she was high energy for 2 hours. She mocked others, herself and I love the fact that she's still in awe of celebrities. An added bonus was that she promoted the "Vet Dog" cause hoping her show raised money to train dogs for injured Vets.

Rave --- I got to spend time with my sister and that is always fun. I'm very fortunate to have a wonderful sister that is also one my closest friends.

Rave --- Got to see two of my fav NJ friends Friday morning. They served me a great breakfast and made me laugh.

Rant --- Idiot drivers on the Merritt Parkway. Here's the scenario, two lane highway and the State closed a lane down. Signs everywhere and you have the standard drivers that wait till last minute to switch lanes. However, what annoyed me, was the woman getting on the roadway - traffic moving 10 miles per hour and a sign in her visual stating left lane closed. She passes people on the shoulder and cuts me off by inserting her car perpendicular in front of mine. I think she did this because she was in my blind spot. Whatever her reason, she wedged her way into the left lane....for 50 feet before realizing she had to get back into my lane. She actually thought I would let her in. Hello??? Are you smoking crack? I let 2 cars in because it helps to move traffic, but I wasn't going to let rude lady in. My rule of thumb is...let one person in and traffic will run. She kept trying and I shook my head and she almost hit me. Ugh..rude people don't belong on roadways.

Rant --- Okay, another driving one - why do people drive in the passing lane when they are driving under the speed limit on a two-lane road?

Rave --- My mom's nursing home took pity on my dad and he is able to visit my mom.

Rave --- Second interview went well.

Rant --- I think the company has a hiring freeze on the position (story of my life)

Rave --- Got confirmation for Kirpalu weekend workshop with sister.

Amazing Race...

Tuesday, February 24, 2009....

Since Amazing Race first aired, I believe my sister has been a die-hard fan. I have to admit, I knew of the show, but didn't start watching till late last season. However, with each season, my sister would say, "wouldn't it be cool if we were contestants on the Amazing Race".

Every time she would make this comment, I would either say "no" or "are you crazy?". I didn't watch the show, but knew that you had to get from Point A to Point B, reading maps, begging, but basically always being lost. Ugh.....

My sister hates my driving and knows that I'm directionally challenged. I'm so directionally challenged that I believe everywhere I'm facing is North. I just don't get the people who can tell which way they're facing and proudly declare "East" and be correct. The only consolation I have is knowing I have a 25% chance of being correct when I declare "North".

In addition to being directionally challenged, I would have no desire to beg. Seriously, begging because you have to is one thing, but begging as part of a game show not so fun.

This is all I knew of the show. Over the years and many requests that we should try out, I agreed to this concept. In theory, we'd make a video satisfying my sister's desire, but the video in reality would not be the winning one. How could it? One gung-ho contestant and the other one just hanging back in the video - yeah, last I knew, that makes for compelling reality t.v..

However, I decided to watch the show late last season and am intrigued. Intrigued enough to watch it from the beginning of this season and now understand why my sister would want me as a partner -- to do all the challenges that have a "height" factor to it.

I'd have to bungee jump and para sail, which I'm fine with. However, I would want some discussion as to who is going to step up to the plate to do the new challenge. I would want some mystery of who is going to hurl themselves off a building or bridge. A life with some mystery is fun.

Sis, knowing what I know now, we could still make the video. However, I'm almost certain, more than my guesses of N/S/E/W, we wouldn't be chosen.

Growing Old

Saturday, February 21, 2009....

Today's medical advances and technologies have extended the fountain of youth for many people. Face lifts, pacemakers and organ replacements have helped assist extend a person's life span. However, I wonder is this a good thing?

Has modern science taken in consideration Alzheimer's? Crashing financial markets against rising medical costs? Has it taken in consideration how awkward it is for the child to now be the parent; how hard it is for the parent to accept this?

I am the youngest of five. My parents practiced the college rhythm method and most of my friends with grandparents are at the same age of my parents.

For the past several years, we have watched my mom's sanity diminish. Last February, we placed her in a good nursing home. My parents purchase Long Term Care insurance (LTC) when it was unheard of, however, in their late 70's, opted out of the Cost-of-Living benefit.

We've watched my parents' nest egg dwindle in this horrible economic market, but what I wasn't prepared for was having talks with dad.

Talks about boundaries that parents teach children are now happening, but reverse. Initially, I had the first talk with dad. He was innocent and although he had the best intentions, perceptions are what count in a nursing home. I explained that he could not offer candy to other patients, nor could he enter the room of another Alzheimer's patient without her family member or a nurse in the room.

Although he was being kindhearted by saying hello and offering candy, rules and regulations perceived there to be some wrong doings. The police were called and a report was sent to the State. My father apologized and signed papers acknowledging everything.

I know and love my father. I know he is not a man that would take sexual advantage of another person, but if a strange man entered my mother's room, I would want the nursing home to take the same precautions.

My father promised to me and the Administrator he would not do this again. However, it is sometimes hard to change what is hard-wired into your personality. Apparently, he did the same thing this past Wednesday and my sister received the call from the nursing home. However, he is past the warning stage and not allowed in without supervision.

My sister pleaded with the home to let him visit my mom in the lobby where there is staff. They seemed open to the idea, but we won't know till Tuesday after a meeting at the nursing home.

In the meantime, my two sisters and I went to see my dad today. We discussed the gravity of the issue and I started the conversation. I admit. I was disappointed that he dismissed the gravity of the situation when I first had the talk with him. Trust me, when the nursing home's administrator calls you at 10:30 p.m. to discuss your dad's behavior, explain police charges were filed, you DON'T sleep.

You stay up and figure out the best way to reprimand, but respect the parent that raised you. It is extremely awkward. I decided the best way was to put the past behind and discuss his behavior moving forward.

We took this same approach today, but it was hard on him. He had already met with several members of the staff at the home yesterday and understands that he can't just show up to see mom. He was visibly upset and for a man that has always been a rock, it was hard to see this.

We are unsure of what will happen. We hope that he is permitted to go on his own to see mom and sit in the lobby. However, if he isn't, his visits will now be weekly. He will have to submit to the schedules of my sister and me to see her.

It is a shame that an 87 year old man is being given rules a parent would give a child. Soon enough, he'll won't be able to drive and wonder do people really understand that extending one's life with modern miracles isn't necessarily the best thing when you lose your basic freedoms.

Rant and Rave Wednesday

Wednesday, February 18, 2009....

If it's Wednesday, it's Rant and Rave day. For readers new to my blog, Wednesday is the day I recap the week of my personal Rants and Raves and without further delay, here they are:

Rave: Yesterday I received a voicemail from a potential employer that he was able to connect with all my professional references and wants to talk further. After talking with the in-house recruiter, he told me he thought me to be most qualified candidate.

Rant: Although recruiter from potential employer believes me to be most qualified and hiring managers were happy with me, they want to have a variety to select from. I was to hear this week, but several more interviews are scheduled. Rave: Potential employer's recruiter is as frustrated as I am.

Rave: Valentine's Day (not my fav day) turned out to be a great weekend with hubby. Flowers, dinner out, dinner in cooked by hubby and time spent with someone who clearly loves me --- how awesome is that?

Rant: Me being so nit-picky. Hubby got me some beautiful red roses and I'm not a fan of the red rose. When I got divorced, I swore that I would speak up and I wouldn't settle. New hubby agrees with this, but I believe that I need to work on the delivery of the message. I may miss the target in letting him know I appreciate the things he does for me before voicing my opinion on what I would like better.

There may be other things, but they have apparently slipped my mind.

Colonics....

Friday, February 12, 2009.....

I haven't a clue why, but my conversation with my sister the other night went like this:

Me - The movie was cute (He's Just Not That Into You)

My Sister - That's great. Okay, decided that I'm definitely getting a colonic (ongoing discussion for the past few years - her desire - my disgust)

Me - Okay, what has confirmed it for you?

My Sister - my massage therapist's friend had one and Barbie's shoe came out.

Me - After ewwwww...speechless for a bit and then ....how long can Barbie's shoe survive in your colon?

I wonder if I ever ate Barbie's shoe when a kid? I don't think so...but, I wonder what things would show up in my colonic from childhood?

Rant and Rave Wednesday

Wednesday, February 11, 2009

Every Wednesday, I will be recapping the past week with some Rants and Raves and encourage others to share their R&Rs in the comments section. It's nice to know what makes others happy or hear what made them realize their life isn't as perfect as a Brady Bunch episode.

I'm actually happy to report I have some great Raves this week. Okay, great to me.
Without further adieu, here is my lists of Rants and Raves for the past week:

Rave: Slept through the entire night without waking up once or taking a sleeping pill. Contrary to popular belief, even when I do taking a sleeping pill, I still wake up in the middle of the night. I ate an extremely light dinner and I think that may be the key. I'm going to try this theory out for the next week.

Rave: I had a great interview last week and have been told by the HR rep that I'll probably be called back for a second one.

Rave: Seeing/seen lots of friends this week. That always brings a smile to my face.

Rave: The weather the past few days. February and 50 degrees in Connecticut. Awesome.

Rant: Local animal shelter. Hubby and I found a great dog at the shelter but because she was in heat, she was not adoptable that day. I called the shelter several times last week, even let them know that hubby and I wanted to adopt her, but on Thursday I was told I'd have to wait a week. Called Monday and found out she was adopted on Sunday.

There are probably other things, but these are the things that stick out in my mind.

Food is Sooooo Personal.....

Monday, February 9, 2009.....

I recognize that most adults have childhood meals that are special to them. Meals they wish they could recreate. Meals that gives great comfort when not feeling well. Well, if that is what you're expecting to read in this entry, I will be disappointing you.

However, the meals that I think horrible, are loved by my sister, Yoga Girl. I'm not quite sure why, but when discussed these three masterpieces my mom took great pleasure in serving us, she gets excited about.

My mom made several classic dishes, but I'm only going to mention three. One is an actual recipe (oddly enough, Epicurious.com doesn't have in its data bank) called Glob. Yup. No mistype. The recipe is called Glob and I think it appropriately named, but you can be the judge.

Glob - ground beef browned and add box frozen mixed veggies. Stir in pan and add a homemade gravy of soy sauce, water and cornstarch (to thicken the yummy sauce, if you want to call soy sauce and water a gravy or sauce). Once thoroughly heated and thickened by yummy sauce, serve over cooked minute rice.

Another fav of my mom's was the hot dog casserole. This casserole was mom's creation and only had 3 ingredients: hot dogs, potatoes and Cheddar cheese soup prepared according to can label directions. You chop up the hot dogs and potatoes into bite size pieces add the Cheddar soup (this is the yummy gravy) and put into casserole dish.

You place the caserole into oven, guessing 350 degrees and this is where the dish could be served one of two ways - hotdogs cooked properly and raw potatoes, or cooked potatoes and shrivelled up hotdogs.

Either way = yucky.

The last dish my mom would make for us was considered by her to be healthy. Pay close attention to the ingredients or you'll miss the healthy ingredient. The dish - Cod Fish Casserole. Prep time, guessing 5 minutes. Cook time, who knows or cares because it was vile.

Combine cans of canned cod fish with cooked box mashed potatoes. Put into casserole dish and sprinkle wheat germ on top for crunch, color and because it is good for you.

Good Eating!

Dinner with Friends....

Sunday, February 8, 2009....

Last night, hubby and I went to my friends house for dinner. It should be noted that the other two couples we were having dinner with are at the opposite spectrum of political views. However, after my wedding reception (Oct 2008), both husbands promised not to discuss politics.

Although we all used to work together, I've typically had dinner with one couple or the other, so I'm glad that we all got together. I'm also happy to report Dave was unable to successfully have me laugh to the point where liquid comes out my nose (I know pretty visualization). It's not because he isn't funny, but having had this happen to me several while dining in Indian restaurants teaches you hot curry through the nostrils not so fun. Now, when I drink, I do when out of his vision.

Last night, the food was great, conversation awesome and everyone was laughing. The host reminded me of the Flight of the Conchords, Business Time, uTube video.

I leave you with the link to watch and start your day off with a good laugh.

The Snuggie.....

Thursday, February 5, 2009.....

There are probably more important things I should be doing to prep for my 2 interviews this afternoon, but instead I've been reading stupid things online.

This morning I was discussing with my sister, a.k.a. Yoga Girl, the Snuggie. Some fellow bloggers have debated getting one and apparently, the Today Show cast was wearing them. I guess the Snuggie will become mainstream; it will become the new bathrobe.

If you think about the concept, it is great. A blanket with hands. However, many people have doubts and have captured it well on this UTube clip. Enjoy.

Rant and Rave Wednesday

Wednesday, February 4, 2009.....

Prior to being unemployed (my P-U period), every year for the past 4 or 5 years, my sister and I would spend about 5 days at Canyon Ranch in Lenox MA. We initially went to celebrate a milestone birthday, but the experience was so amazing that we went back year after year to kick-start the holiday season.

Our last visit in 2007, we went to this seminar, the name escapes me, but the speaker introduced the concept of practicing gratitude. The speaker, Jerry Posner, had such positive energy he was infectious. He mentioned that he kept a journal for 7 years where he listed on a daily basis 5 things he was grateful for. After 7 years, he ditched the journal because he changed. Changed how he looked at things, approached things and even his lifestyle changed. He is a positive force to be reckoned with.

His lecture spoke to me. I love to journal and while at the Ranch, read a book which discussed the benefits of practicing gratitude.

In November 2007, I started the journal. I stopped once I became unemployed, but started again late summer because I realized that now was the time I needed to recognize what I was most grateful for.

I've been consistent, until this week. I can't think of more than 3 things I'm grateful for. I'm bothered by this. In an effort to remove my block, I thought I'd post about my Rants & Raves for this week. I might make this a regular Wednesday posting and encourage people to share their Rant or Rave in the comments section.

Raves - Got my hubby hooked on watching the Bachelor and now when Jason kisses a girl on the show, we kiss. This is a takeoff of t.v. drinking games (i.e., drink whenever "Miss" is said during the Miss America pageant; or "Hi Bob" during the Bob Newhart Show - thank you TVLD)

Rants - Charmin Ultra Strong TP. It's so strong and thick that it causes problems with the plumbing. Back to Scott's for me.

Rant & Rave - (Rant):The voice in my head that tries to discourage me from exercising. (Rave): My iPod streaming great music through my head to muffle the stupid voice.

That's it for this week.

If It's Tuesday, I Must be Giving a Tribute to the Letter "T"

Tuesday, February 3, 2009.....

Let me explain..... LiLu at one of the blogs I love to read (http://www.livitluvit.com/) played a cute game that I decided to play and requested a letter.

If you want to participate, leave a comment on this post and I will assign you a letter. You then write about 10 things you love that begin with your assigned letter and post them on your blog. When people comment on your posted list, you give them a letter and the chain continues on and on.

After asking not to receive the letter "X" or "Z", I was given the letter "T". Here are the Ten Terrific Things I Love that Start with the Letter T:

1. Tequila - Silver Patron is my choice of consumption and after a horrible night of cheap tequila drinking, I've learned the importance that good tequila = no hangover.

2. Tea - A girl has to drink something other than alcohol. I love hot and iced teas, in addition to diet cola, but have come addicted to Starbucks 1/2 Passion/1/2 unsweetened lemonade with a lot of ice anytime of the year.

3. Toenails - Okay, what I really love are pedicures, but that didn't start with a "T". There is a place by me that has a grape pedicure and it is awesome. Unfortunately, unemployment has put a damper in getting them. Unemployment has helped me decide my next favorite letter "T" item....

4. Tens & Twenties. Yup. Moola, money, cash. Be unemployed for 9 months and you'll realize that I'm not materialistic wanting cash, but practical (Suze Orman would so proud of me).

5. Thyme. Yes, I said Thyme. The spice. I love to cook and have several fav spices and this is one of them.

6. Thanksgiving. I host and love to cook. Do I need to say more?

7. Top Chef, The Food Network. Hello...Just mentioned my love of cooking in #5 & #6 above, how could I not love the t.v show and a network devoted entirely to cooking.

8. Thunderstorms. I love to go to bed to the sound of thunder and rainstorms. I find it relaxing.

9. Texting. I have friends that hate texting, but I love to text, send pics & videos - great way to communicate when you really can't.

10. Travel. Love it. Love it. Love it.

Weekend Recap

Monday, February 2, 2009....

First, I need to address the stupid groundhog seeing his shadow --- has anyone thought of pulling a blind groundhog out of his hole on a sunny day???? Winter sun on bright white snow, how could he not see it?

Okay, I'm done ranting about the groundhog and the fact it will be another six weeks of winter (my friend told me the groundhog prediction is only 39% accurate - phew)....

This weekend, hubby and I grabbed a bite and headed over to see the Dark Knight at our local IMAX. I know, it was released in the summer, but he hadn't seen it and seeing it on IMAX is really cool.

Saturday proved to be a day full of errands, but included a stop at the local animal shelter where I think we found the dog we want to adopt. She's in heat and not available to adopt at the moment, but according to the shelter no one has asked to adopt her. She's a beagle and very cute. She'll fit in fine with all the howling dogs that my neighbor seems to house.

I also got to witness my new hubby almost kill himself on the roof. A sight a newlywed always wants to witness. He was on a step ladder by the chimney and the very old step ladder broke while he was on it. Luckily, he caught himself and I could only hear what happened. I wasn't up for him doing this stunt and if I had seen it happen, he would have spent the rest of the day with me being worried and saying I told you so (always an annoying way to spend a Saturday).

The rest of the weekend included more errands, good food, drinking and football. Although the Steelers are not my team, I was hoping they would win and they did (barely).

Besides the non-blind groundhog giving us six more weeks of winter, this week is looking good with a confirmed interview later in the week (woo hoo).
