Jigsaw Puzzles

Tuesday, September 28, 2010....

Last Wednesday I turned 45. I didn't really celebrate like I normally would, but I decided to create a list of 45 things I wanted to do in my 45th year of life.

Last year, I did 44 new things and I think I tried/did 44 new things, but never wrote them down as I did them. This year, I took a different approach. I made a list of 45 things I wanted to accomplish. This list isn't a resolution list, but things I want to accomplish to lead a fuller life. Sounds easy to come up with 45 things, but it's not when you have no cash to do some things you really want to do (i.e., travel to Italy for 3 weeks or take fabulous cooking classes). Each item on the list has no $$ value on it.

Well, I've had this 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle I got years ago and figured why not finally do it. I started it last Thursday evening, and without hubby's assistance, started working on it in the evenings (note: hubby didn't want to help until last evening when there were fewer than 100 pieces left - I let him help until 40 pieces were left). Last night, I went to bed with having fewer than 40 pieces to put in. I start this a.m. and was cranking away at it until the last piece. Oddly enough, the company gave me a duplicate piece and neglected to put the piece I needed in the box.

Ummmm.... this is both frustrating and very funny at the same time. I actually wrote the company telling them of my dilemma. I'm not sure they'll care (they probably won't), but I just had to. I'll let you know if they write back (again, I doubt they will).

HAPPY belated BIRTHDAY!! If we all had unlimited bank accounts omg the stuff we'd get to do! That's pretty cool tho that you finished that puzzle. That would infuriate me to no end that there is just a duplicate piece. I hope they write back!

Happy belated birthday! Last wednesday was my daughter's 19th birthday. I like the idea of the list.

But I absolutely suck at jigsaw puzzles. The hubby and kids can zip through them while I'm still searching for the third piece. Lol.

Happy Birthday! What an interesting idea, to make a list like that. And, you're starting off on it right away. Let us know when you finish!!

Happy belated birthday! Good on you for making a list of things you want to do. Perhaps saving the money in your 45th year to go to Italy would be one of them.

I can tell you that three weeks in Italy would be an amazing experience. I'm talking from experience.

Here is a tip: rent an apartment rather than a hotel room. What it costs to rent an apartment for one week is the same value as a 3 star hotel.

Happy Belated Birthday! What a wonderful idea :) I've heard of all of those 30 before 30 things, but it's too easy to put off.

I love the idea of doing such and such new things, to match your age. Hmmm...perhaps I need to do that? It would be clever!

If they had good customer service, they'd mail you the piece. Let us know!

I turned 46 in July and '46 new things' sounds like a fun idea! Of course, I only have 10 months left so I'll have to wait til I can do '47 new things'.

But that'll give me time to write up my list...and I'll need it, because I can't think of anything to do! ; )

Happy birthday!

I try to do a puzzle once a year. They are fun for me in moderation.

I cannot believe you got an extra piece that wasn't the one you needed! I would be so frustrated!

That is what I would have done too. Write a letter or send email expressing my concern and disappointment in their product. You are probably right, they won't respond, but I hope they do. Happy birthday. You are so young compared to me and I enjoy reading your posts.

i'm terrible at puzzles. love them - but i'm not so good at them. how frustrating to find that the piece you needed wasn't there!

happy birthday, stranger. Your story about the puzzle was funny. I am one of those people who sees events like that as having some deeper meaning. I am never quite sure if I've interpreted correctly, of course. But doesn't it seem symbolic of.. something?

I love puzzles - I actually did one this past weekend and have actually run into this situation before... well, sort of... missing a piece (the spare piece is just strange...) and I hate to tell you but the company's response was to send me a brand new sealed in the box puzzle.

If you're not a huge puzzle fan I won't blame you for calling it done missing a piece :)

45 is definately a Significant birthday- for me it was anyhow, except I had two of them as I can never remember my age and celebrated the first 45 a year early. I only discovered it by accident months later when my next sister mentioned her age and I know for certain sure she is exactly two years younger!

Anyhow I'm glad you wrote to the jigsaw co.: if no one every does things like this then how can the companies know there is a problem? Besides you never know- as a thank you they might send you 1000 jigsaws!!!!

Happy very belated birthday! Making a list the same number of your years is a great idea.

I'm a big puzzle fan and started doing them with my family growing up. Everyone always "stole" one piece so they could put the last piece in!

I wonder what the company will say.

Happy belated! I cant believe that... I loved puzzels when I was younger, doing them with my grandparents and sometimes when I see one, I think I should do it again... stress reliever, but maybe not in your case!

That's a fun concept - to celebrate your birthday by honoring what it is, another day of living in the world - might as well spend it doing things you want to do! It is pretty damn funny that the last piece is missing. Just goes to show some things are best left unsolved ;0) Happy belated birthday.
