Fashion Faux Pas....

Thursday, October 22, 2009....

Yesterday, I blogged about finding a heavenly pair of slippers. I'm all about comfort and having worked out of my home prior to becoming unemployed, slippers became the preferred footwear in my office.

Although I love my new slippers....

....and have a been a bit out of touch with the latest shoe fashion, I do know not to wear them outside my home. I'm pretty confident my wonderful slippers will not be worn by the models on any runway at Bryant Park during fashion week.

Imagine my surprise when I saw a woman wearing my same slippers the other night. Seriously, I wanted to ask where her Snuggie was, but didn't. Instead, as I waited for my name to be called for the focus study, I couldn't keep my eyes off her feet.

Did I miss the memo about slippers becoming the hot new fashion for outer foot wear?

Even if I did, I still don't think I would wear outside the home. Sometimes, no matter how much something is considered 'in-fashion', I'm a rebel and go against the grain of every fashion magazine.

I love slippers and PJ's as much as the next girl, but there are some things that just shouldn't be worn outside your house. Yowsa!

well...in nyc anything goes, non? i may have been guilty of wearing my pj's in public in queens, just because i knew no one would bat an eye.

I refused to go to Lowes with my hubs one early Saturday morning because he wanted go in his pj pants. We had a huge argument about it, but I stood my ground. I see way to much of that nonsense though...I thought that it was just around these parts. Hate to hear that it's nationwide.

I don't know I think you could start a fashion trend.

Were you at Walmart? LOL

I'm all about comfort. I never care what it looks like, as long as it feels good on me.

I still see teenage girls wearing pajama bottoms in stores and at the high school these days. I wish someone would tell them that it's not okay.

I love slippers. My feet would freeze off without them!

Hugs!!

I have a similar pair of slipper in black. The other morning while rushing my daughter to school, I neglected putting on REAL footwear because we were in a hurry. In the car for dropoff, who would know?

But of course I had to help her inside with something...so here I am in my slippers and wouldn't you know one of the other moms asked me where I got my shoes...

Argh.
I mean, Ugg.

:-)

I hate driving through a neighborhood and seeing someone checking the mailbox in PJ's or a nightgown, but that is just me!

So....wearing pj pants to the grocery is out too then, right?

Badass Geek said...

I used to wear my slippers to work, when I worked catching shoplifters. It started out as forgetting to switch to my sneakers, but then it was just so damn comfortable.

JennyMac said...

LOVE those slippers. And I have multiple pairs of Uggs and I wont wear them outside. People and their indoor/outdoor slippers.

Karyn Bernard (French Charming) said...

Your slippers look so comfy! I not surprised to hear that someone was wearing slippers outside of the home...I see people wearing PJ's out all the time. Oh well, I guess some people choose comfort over style.

How could you not ask where her Snuggie was?!

Ugh! Assault on the eyes aside, one of the great joys of slippers is that -- depending on how often you vacuum, I guess -- they're your one dang pair of shoes with clean soles!

Footwear fail. Unless she was using it to detract potential creepy foot fetishists, I guess.

my son wears his slippers out and about more often than any other shoewear (he's 20). I know a lot of the high school girls wear pajama bottoms out and about too; I'm with you, maybe I'm a bit old fashion but there are just some things that you don't be seen in when in public

honestly, as i'm on the brink of losing a toenail i'm considering wear slippers as standard footwear.

New England Girl said...

I am always shocked to see people out and about with slippers and other nighttime-appropriate wear. It's embarrassing for even me to just see! I don't get dressed up to go out by any means, but I certainly change out of my pjs. :)

Mama Zen said...

I live in a college town, and I see pj pants and slippers everywhere!

I've gone out a few times (to the grocery store or drug store if I'm just running out for a minute) in track pants and I hate even doing that! I couldn't imagine wearing slippers or other nighttime wear out of the house..no matter how cute they are!!

Did she have rollers in her hair as well?

Living and Loving in L.A. said...

As a fashion designer, I feel qualified to say the 99% of what most people wear will be considered "hideous" with in the next two years. So I say you rock those cute furry slippers to your heart's content!
Although, talking about comfort a faux pas, I'm being the blonde from the Snuggie commercial for Halloween. What do I know?

Spot said...

I never wear my slippers out. That would dirty the soles, then I wouldn't be able to wear them inside, thus defeating the purpose! I too have seen many people wear slippers and pjs out. And no, not something I do.

But I do have this one pair of slip ons that my daughter just bought me that are as comfy as slippers...and my hubby actually thought they were slippers, so I can see that they might cause confusion...

I will never wear slippers and pj's out in public. But I have seen quite a few people doing just that around here. Especially at school drop off and WalMart.

Midtown Girl said...

Thank you!! I believe in getting dressed BEFORE leaving my apt - I see some chicks in the corner deli in their PJ's!! WTH?

And some guys are even worse - walking out in what looks like long boxers and those plastic beach slipper thingys...

Btw - just found out they made Snuggie for....dogs!! I think I might get this for Midtown Pups ;-)

those slippers look soooo cozy happy weekend sista!

LMAO @ Tammi G's comment!!!! And a big HELL NO to wearing slippers outside.

I think ever since the onslaught of Uggs (which, as we know, is short of "Uggsly"), footwear rules have become quite loose.

Girls around my office wear their Uggs with leggings and oversized sweatshirts, as if they're going to jump into bed any minute.

I'm thinking your beautiful new slippers (as long as they have hard bottoms) can be work to get the mail, run to your car for something and take out the trash.

But that's about it.

Constructive Attitude said...

I think it's fine to wear them outside. who cares!

fgrngtllt said...

i am guilty of wearing my bedroom slippers outdoors but its usually when i know am not getting out of the car but i also live in a not so big city so no1 really cares-well i hope they don't

Sunshine Mama said...

This is so funny. I JUST got Uggs for my birthday and all I can think is...gosh... these should be slippers...wow. They're warm, comfortable.

Maybe that gal needs some Uggs.

Patty Ann said...

I'm jonesing for some new slippers myself, and like you feel pretty confident about wearing them outside my home. Ehh, to each his own right?

Thank you so much for stopping by, I look forward to reading your blog!

p.s- AMEN to the rsvp thing!!!

We sometimes see people wearing their slipper boots and jammies to the shops in the morning. I must say, I'm appalled; how quick is it to pull on a pair of jeans and a jacket for goodness sake? Harumph! *L* x

L.C. said...

I had a pair of those a few years back. The most comfortable pair ever! I can't tell you how many times I would walk out of the house, get in the car and see that I had my slippers on and would have to go back in to put on shoes. Looked okay with jeans but completely ridicules with a dress. So who says that we have to sacrifice comfort for style?

midlifeslices said...

You, my husband, and his entire family are the only ones I know that call them "slippers". Heheh..... I call them "house shoes" because that's where you wear them. If you were supposed to wear them at the mall or focus group, then they'd be called "mall shoes" or "focus group" shoes, right? *wink*

btw, I don't really wear house shoes, I usually just put on my flip flops no matter how cold it is,& they CAN be worn to focus group. :)

Smart Mouth Broad said...

The slippers do resemble the Uggs that are meant to be worn outside the home. I have a pair just like yours with a thicker sole (meant for outdoors) but I've never worn them further than the mailbox. LOL

My 13-yr-old son went through a quick (thank God) phase when he wore his slippers anywhere I'd let him. Luckily, he's growing fast and has now found a new favorite pair of footwear!

ughhhh i HATE it when people wear their pajamas out. Ugly pajama pants are by far the worst! At least put on some sweat pants!

DB said...

I have, in the past month, mistakenly worn my slippers out to run errands...so it does happen

Kelly said...

Ohh. I have been looking for a comfy pair. I dont think I would leave the house in them though...I just think of slippers like the only shoe you can put on your furniture and the thought of having them walking around the city streets is nasty!

Joanna Jenkins said...

I'm with you-- Slippers (as well as flannel PJs) are not my idea of "outside" clothes. And besides, I want my cozy slippers to say nice and clean so I can put my feet up on the sofa :-)

Hey chickie -

Ok, so with the coffee table, the issue is that my living space is not that large, so the one I really want is too big for my space. I LOVE it but it just wouldn't fit. So I am looking for something with a similar look but smaller, and I still can't find it.

Speaking of DIY's! I initially wanted one of those tufted ottoman tables and found a DIY for one on ApartmentTherapy.com, but since I change my mind to getting the mirrored glass version I gave up on the DIY...

LOL! bc for me, the table has to be a dining table/coffee/work space..dilemmas!! ;-) xoxo

I hear you. I am old-school in the way that I don't care to see someone's jammies or slippers on their person in the daytime outside their house.

Children of the 90s said...

I used to do that in the dorms in college, but never in real life. A snuggie does sound good about now, though....

Jane – Right?....

The Actor’s Diet – LOL. I may have worn pjs in between dorms while in college, but not since.

CarrieBeth - I agree. I think you can get away with it when younger, but I was a focus group for the magazine Real Simple.

Unknown Miami – Pass.

Tami G – LOL. Okay, that made me laugh.

Matty – I’m about comfort too, but house slippers shouldn’t be bringing in street dirt. Besides, you’re a guy and can get away with more.

Green-Eyed Momster – This look is okay for teenagers and college kids, but a focus group comprised of 40 to 50 year olds for Real Simple, after a workday – wrong, wrong, wrong….

F8hasit – LOL. I’ve just learned that Ugg makes a shoe resembling my slipper and it’s in style – you were a fashion trend setter and didn’t know it.

Otin – Oh please….I bring out the trash in a bathrobe. That doesn’t count.

Jules – Yupper – unless it is the middle of the night and you’ve run out of some snack food to eat while watching a Flavor Flav rerun.

Badass Geek – How can you catch a shoplifter in slippers? Didn’t they come off? I marvel at the fact you could do this.

French Charming – I’ve yet to see that.

LiLu – Sometimes, I can restrain the inner voice in my head.

Notthatkindofagirlblog – EXACTLY!!!!

A corgi – Bedroom wear outdoors is reserved for the youth – 40+ year olds at focus groups, not so much.

OP – I had that happen when I ran. Bandaids became my best friend while training.

New England Girl – Exactly. Same here.

Mama Zen – I can imagine and acceptable.

Jessica – Track pants are nowhere close to PJs.

Candice – Oddly enough no. She took the time to carry a fine leather purse and put on make-up -- go figure.

Living and Loving – Oh…please don’t tell me that. Btw, the slippers are only worn indoors….I think that is a hysterical trick-or-treat costume.

Spot – EXACTLY! Why the hell do I want to vacuum more than I do. Don’t confuse them or you’ll be vacuuming more and that would be sad.

Kys – What’s with Walmart? I might have to go and check this out now.

Midtown Girl – You have hot dressers in your neighborhood. No wonder why you wanted to keep the lease. Please take a pic of Midtown pup in it.

CC – They are and great for rainy day movie watching.

Life, Love and Lola – From what I’m reading, Walmart is a fashion mecca….

Kk – I actually own a pair of Uggs. But they are black suede flats with a furry inside sole – you’d never guess they are uggs. The return of the legging saddens me. I wore them in the 80s and that was enough.

Constructive Attitude – Then you should.

Fgrngtllt – I wouldn’t want to track the dirt in because I have to vacuum – I’d also be afraid of slipping out of them.

Sunshine Mama – LOL. I love comfy soft feet…

Patty Ann – Oh…you misread, I don’t wear them out. Your RSVP entry cracked me up.

Helen – LOL. I’m glad to hear there are other places than Walmart where people shop in their PJs.

LC – I don’t know, but it stuck. I replace these slippers every few months because they are so freakin comfy.

Midlifeslices – LOL.

Smarth Mouth Broad – I’m just learning there are Uggs resembling my slippers, but this women didn’t have those on.

Barb – I think every teen and college student goes through that phase.

Adorably Distracted – LOL – Never thought about seeing ugly pajamas out – that would be the worst!

DB – If Heidi Klum heard you, she’d say it doesn’t.

Kelly – EXACTLY!

Joanna – EXACTLY! That is the beauty of the slipper

Green Momster – I noticed that and wonder if it’ll happen – it seems I get to 198 and then one leaves and then another comes along. I just hope I don’t drop down to one.

Midtown – Why not do the tuffed ottoman and put a mirrored tray on it?

Joy – I think there is a time and place for the PJ --- I even think seeing teens and college students in Pjs is fine.

Children of the 90s – So did I – I even did it between dorms.

Oh well... I do love slippers too, and I agree about the surprise of seeing people wearing them outside... I'd say it's simply not practical, but for lazy people for whom it's too much trouble to put on normal outside shoes...
