Time to Relinquish My Girl Card....

Monday, August 16, 2010....

Confession: I am not a fan of purses or shoes. There. I said it.

Yes, I'm female, but I really hate to shoe shop or to buy/change or match a purse to an outfit. However, I will admit I'm on the hunt for the world's smallest purse I can get away with carrying.

I had one and I wore it out. Now I carry my standby. A Coach bag that I've had forever, but it is bigger than I need and I'm always fishing around in the purse for the one item I need. Because it is too big for my purpose, as soon as I put my hand in the purse, things shuffle around as if they were running away from my hand. Nine out of ten times I end up emptying the contents out on the dining room table.

In the movie You've Got Mail, I was in awe of Meg Ryan's character. Sure, she was cute and lovable, but SHE NEVER CARRIED A PURSE. It was amazing. Whatever she needed just magically appeared. Money at the farmer's market "POOF". A key to get in her house "POOF". I wonder why the magic fairy purse doesn't follow me around.

I also have to admit, when I was working in an office, I did enjoy shoe shopping. There was a purpose to buying fun shoes. However, the moment I went virtual, well comfy slippers replaced the heel. Why wouldn't it? I don't think my cat cared what shoes were on my feet (unless her tail was under my foot and that happened more than I like to admit). So, it's been years and, other than sneakers and slippers , I haven't shoe shopped in probably 4 years.

Wow. I guess I'll be giving back my girlie-girl card shortly.

I never carry a purse. I have a small backpack for when I'm travelling to put my computer and paperwork and stuff into, but otherwise, nope, no purse.

Of course, I also have the world's most complete collection of women's pocket-having clothes. If it doesn't have pockets (that can actually carry stuff without ruining the line) I don't buy it.

If guys can do it, why not me?

I have an enormous bag and I can't imagine otherwise. I toss anything and everything in there. I've tried those bitty bags and I just can't do it!

I alternate between a little "wristlet"... and a huge tote, sometimes the wristlet goes in the tote... as to a number of other necessities I feel naked without. I'm really a shoeholic but lately have been a flip flop wearing comfortholic.

I'm not a purse or shoe girl either. I have, like, 5 pairs of shoes. And I have 3 purses, but I rarely ever change it to match my outfit or whatever. That's why my main purse is black, because it goes with everything. The last time I switched purses, I forgot to switch all my stuff back the next day and ended up hungry at work with no wallet. Screw that.

I'm with ya. I used to work in a shoe store in high school - I hated shopping for shoes or clothes - so working there made it easy for me to pick out a pair when I was bored at work. Now, I only have about 10 pairs total including winter boots, flip flops, work shoes and sneakers. I wear them until they are falling apart and then go to DSW and buy another round of shoes.

As for purses - I learned from watching my mother that the bigger the purse she had, the more people would ask her to just hang on to their stuff in her purse. So I buy the smallest ones I can find. Phone, keys, shades, camera and cash/cards. That's it. No room for anyone else's crap.

I never shoe shop. I love little, tiny purses but only carry one for a whole season. I guess I'll give my card up too!

I hate purses too! Thank god someone said it - they suck. I like little wallets that you can fit you id, bank card, and a $10. The rest? Who needs it?! Great post my friend.

J – EXACTLY!

BV – Well, you have kids. Although grown, I imagine that out of habit you have everything under the sun you’d need for an emergency.

Brian – My husband has a cooler that he uses as his man purse – it’s so clunky and travels in the car with him.

McGillicutty – you have kids. I thought it was automatically assumed that you have to carry a big bag.

BeckEye – YAY! I really thought I was going to get abused for this post. I’ve had the same issue with the purse switching, curse and just have given up and carry black to go with everything.

The Bumbles – I shop with a mission. I have something in mind, go in the store, walk right to the area, purchase it and leave. I get great pleasure trying to get in and out of a store in under 15 minutes.
Smart for buying the small purse. Hubby has asked me to hold things for him and I’ve learned that lesson too.

Debbie - A fun little purse only lasts about one season.

Sunshinemeg – I’m with you on the little wallet – just made that VW makes really clunky keys.

Kk – okay, your comment made me laugh and I can only imagine this hurt to read.

What about a wristlet purse? Or one of those slimline hard case purses that's more like a wallet. Don't know what they're called but they're small enough to carry money and cards and you could hang your keys off it.

Jewels - That sounds fabulous! I've never heard of them. I'm now officially on a hunt for one.

if you have to give back your girl card, i guess i have to as well. i HATE shoe shopping, purses and make up.

but i do carry a purse out of necessity. a big one so i can either throw a legal pad inside so i can bring it to court. or throw some toys and stuff in it so i don't have to carry a purse and diaper bag.

I don't judge. I would live in flip flops if I could, and purses hurt my shoulders.

Jaime - the only way you can get out of carrying a purse as a mom is if you had someone following behind you handing you things. You're pretty much screwed for the next 12 years carrying a purse.

Herding Cats - flip flops are great. I have a friend that would wear flip flops year round, but CT weather gets in the way.
