The Lingering Odors from My Kitchen.....

I live in a small house and cook in a very small kitchen. Often when I cook, the aroma, or odor, lingers throughout the night. Sometimes the house is filled with the scent of a chicken roasting or vanilla if we baked (that is rare, but it happens). These scents I like. However, last night I made turnip greens for the first time.

I cooked them with a little rice wine vinegar, veggie stock and Asian chili paste. There wasn't any smell while I was cooking them,but afterwards, I have only one word: HORRID.

The smell was so bad, it made it difficult to sleep and I was up spraying Fabreeze sometime in the middle of the night. It still smells this morning and I am now forced to think of something to make to combat the smelly foot odor smell. Hmmm.... not sure what, but I'll come up with something so I don't pass out or have the smell penetrate into my skin (god, I hope I don't smell like that).

Btw, the turnips greens were actually very tasty. Smoky and spicy. It'd be great with white rice (and I'm not a big fan of plain white rice) and sesame chicken.

I've never even heard of turnip greens. I like regular turnips though. Ha, so how come they stink so bad yet taste so good? How is that fair?

hehe. i like my greens but i totally understand the smells emanating from the kitchen...lol

Veg Ass - you should try them. I was surprised how 'meaty' they were - lots of substance. Kind of reminds me of kale.

Ironically brewing coffee is one way to eliminate the smell. Oh and Lemons.

I adore turnip greens! I think I ate my weight in them when we were in Alabama on vacation, they were on every restaurant menu! I never make them at home (since no one else will eat them) but I bet they would smell up the kitchen. Can you open the windows?

ME - hubby made coffee this morning & nothing! It took almost the entire day to get rid of the smell.

Spot - I have no window I can open in the kitchen (there is one, but I can't open it).

How about lighting some candles for awhile. It might help burn up the air.

LMB, if this happends again, fill a large bowl with white vinegar and leave it on the counter all night. It will absorb all the odors from the kitchen. Trust me it works.

Nothing beats the odor combining onions, turnips, sauerkraut, and sausage cooking. And it hangs about for days in the winter.

Nothing like reliving meals past.

Oh I know that feeling. I am a real smell freak and can smell the nasty warm garbage in the kitchen during the middle of the summer, from my bedroom while sleeping! Broccoli, asparagus, cauliflower and anything made with oil...all culprits! I hope it's smelling better now!

My neighbors downstairs are from China and constantly cook turnips for long bouts of time. There is only one way to dissipate the smell and that is simply opening a window, turning on a fan, and then covering up the odor with scented candles or diffuser concentrates. The best scented oil to cut through turnip smell is Spearmint, Peppermint, or Wintergreen.
