Taking for Granted Modern Conveniences....

Monday, March 15, 2010.....

Very brief recap of my weekend....

Wind - 60 miles per hour

Rain - hours and hours of it which is fine until....

Loss of Electricity which means NO SUMP PUMP

At 3 a.m. hubby and I went downstairs to empty the water filling up our basement because the sump pump was out and we don't own a generator.

Luckily, my basement serves as the laundry room so there is a large sink we used to dump the buckets of water into.

We were not able to get a generator (Home Depot sold out of all 20 in 10 minutes and none were available in the other surrounding stores), but the electricity came on around 8:30 a.m. (16 hours after it went off).

The cable t.v. and Internet back on another 12 hours.

Odd how much we take modern conveniences for granted - no lights, no use of cordless phones, no connection via tv or Internet to outside world and NO DAMN SUMP PUMP. I missed that the most.

I hope everyone had a better weekend. Rain today, but no complaining because I have electricity.

If I lose power for 5 minutes, all hell breaks loose. I have toddlers. I can't imagine losing power AND having a flooded basement though - I'll take the toddlers over that.

ugh. yeah no internet does not make me a happy boy...hope this is coming to an end for you soon!

Ah, but you truly haven't lived until you've siphoned out basement water through a garden hose.

That sucks. Big time. Glad the powers back on.

Our basement doesn't flood, but one of the culverts got clogged and formed a mini lake right across from my house. Which was in danger of washing out the road, until the boys put on swimsuits and unclogged it. Did I mention the water temp was probably around 33 degrees? Now I have sick boys.

Rain, rain, go AWAY!!

We don't have a basement. It rained on the weekend but that mostly just melted the piles of snow only small piles left now. Did your cell phones work? That would be the only way to reach outside world, huh.

Oh, I hate it for you. I am glad the electricity is back on.

Oh goodness... I'm sorry, that stinks. At least, like you said, you have electricity now. I've been hearing some horror stories about winds and rain... We don't have it right now, at home, where I am, but at school, there's a good chance it's going on around campus. It was bad when we were leaving...

Stay dry and safe!

Ouch! My mother owns a house in a neighboring town and we had to do the same with the basement during one storm. The sump pump had somehow failed - not due to electricity, but some other issue - and it was NOT fun trying to get up all of that water. I'm glad the electricity is back. I hope there wasn't any damage done to the area.

Electricity makes everything better! Hopefully your week is better than the weekend.

I would probably cry if I couldn't get online....

I'm glad you're okay LMB, was thinking about you. All the streets around me lost power, but thank God we were spared. I was on the Merritt during the height of storm, tree limbs all over the place. I was grateful to get home alive. Glad you're okay.

I remember we had a power cut the day before we went on holiday last year. Luckily it only lasted four hours but I hadn't started packing yet so it wasn't exactly ideal.

I have been watching the storm reports for the northeast. It is pretty bad. At least you have a sink down there.

I want to hug you. I know hun. It sucks. We had flooding too, but I took preventive measures just in case. It's happened to us before and pissed me off.

This time when I saw the forecast I thought I should put towels and blankets on that side just in case. It worked.

Wasn't the wind and rain insane this weekend?! We were out of power for a long time, and trees were down all over the neighborhood. Glad everyone's ok!

Ugh. I'm sorry you went through that. I decided a long time ago that I would have been a very bad Pilgrim. (Probably a very dead Pilgrim.)

Been there, done that with the basement. We do take things from granted, especially electricity. Imagine all that stuff in the fridge and freezer.

My brother lives in CT and he said, "It's just a little rain." We didn't believe him because he's a perpetual optimist.

That reminds me to make sure that everything is in working order for when I have to go through something similar.

Yikes...hope you are all dried out soon.

Did you spend the time singing with Monkey and Beaker?

oh, i feel you pain. surprisingly not with this storm, but with others.

on a technology note, this is my second day in a row at work with internet or email. thankfully wireless is up and running (and I have a laptop). a majority of the company can't access anything beyond their own desktop.

how did we work 20 years ago????

How awful, you poor thing!! The last time we had a power cut here, both MD and Charlie hid under the blanket and I had to blunder around for candles alone... cowards!

No generator - for shame!

(Severe weather hits enough around here that I have a big switch on the back porch that disconnects from the grid and fire up the diesel in the garage for the generator.)

Here's hoping all returns to normal status soon!

You totally forgot to mention that Mr. LMB had to consult me for an update on local news and weather because of TV/cable withdrawals....yay for electricity!

Ohhh I got the rain too. I don't know HOW i didn't lose power, but everyone at my job did. The boys came in with 5 o'clock shadows cuz they only had electric razors. This was a crazy storm, just insane!!!

Megan – It was weird to have no Internet, but I was a bit worn out from carrying 1 & 5 gallon containers of water to the sink so I didn’t really miss the Internet because I was vegging out.

Esmerelda – LOL. That would be horrible. My husband was whiny enough because we couldn’t watch the news. So much whining that I called my sister and had her read him the headline news so I could get some peace.

Brian Miller – I bet you’d get used to it.

Badass Geek – You will now be known to me as “Suck It Man”.

Spot – I am too! I feel your pain. I remember growing up and having to clear the sewer grate doing a storm to prevent further flooding on parents’ front lawn or in their home.

TechnoBabe – My cell phone did work and it was almost ready to be car charged. I used it sparingly because the battery sucks on it.

Jane – So am I!

Jennifer – I actually love a good wind & rain storm when I have power.

Stereos and Souffles – Storm was great. Everything else, sucked.

New England Girl – Luckily no damage because everything in that area were on platforms. Haven’t a clue why, but happy it was.

Yankee Girl – LOL… electricity does make everything better. I’m so shocked at how much my life is dependent on the Internet now. Actually, it scares me a bit.

Maria.palermo – Funny thing, I was mocking hubby for not wanting to go to store because of storm and later learned 2 guys in NY were killed walking home when a tree fell on them. Glad to hear you made it home safely.

P – that would suck (I’m assuming you were trying to pack in the dark).

Otin – Actually, I was thrilled about the sink down in basement. I hope no family members were impacted by the storm.

Lyn – I’m glad to hear the towels and blankets worked.

Melissa – Thanks and same here!

Tracie – LOL. I don’t know how they lived without electricity. Wait, what am I saying…I don’t know how they wore those hats.

Matty – I wouldn’t let hubby open the fridge.

J.J. – He could be right. Depending upon where you live in CT you weren’t really hit with the storm. I’m along the coast by NYC. People living in the Hartford area weren’t hit too badly.

J - We’re now getting a water alarm for the sump pump and a generator – Woo Hoo – bet you’re jealous.

JennyMac – LOL…I like my ears so no singing with those two!

Kk – isn’t it weird how dependent we’ve grown on technology – wait, it’s not weird, just scary.

Charlie’s Tribe – LOL. Is Charlie really much help?

Dan - I’ve learned my lesson and correcting that situation. I love how you’ve set yours up – very accessible. I think my generator will stored in the garage because we don’t have the same type of storms you do.

Blueviolet – unfortunately, neither did I….

DB - Maybe he just wanted to hear your dulcet tones…nah, he was jonesing for a news & weather fix.

Captain Dumbass – imagine your home – 2 kids no t.v. Oh. My. God.

Melanie’s Randomness – You’re lucky you had power, but I read about your adventures and you had your fair share of storm crap.
