Food is Sooooo Personal.....

Monday, February 9, 2009.....

I recognize that most adults have childhood meals that are special to them. Meals they wish they could recreate. Meals that gives great comfort when not feeling well. Well, if that is what you're expecting to read in this entry, I will be disappointing you.

However, the meals that I think horrible, are loved by my sister, Yoga Girl. I'm not quite sure why, but when discussed these three masterpieces my mom took great pleasure in serving us, she gets excited about.

My mom made several classic dishes, but I'm only going to mention three. One is an actual recipe (oddly enough, Epicurious.com doesn't have in its data bank) called Glob. Yup. No mistype. The recipe is called Glob and I think it appropriately named, but you can be the judge.

Glob - ground beef browned and add box frozen mixed veggies. Stir in pan and add a homemade gravy of soy sauce, water and cornstarch (to thicken the yummy sauce, if you want to call soy sauce and water a gravy or sauce). Once thoroughly heated and thickened by yummy sauce, serve over cooked minute rice.

Another fav of my mom's was the hot dog casserole. This casserole was mom's creation and only had 3 ingredients: hot dogs, potatoes and Cheddar cheese soup prepared according to can label directions. You chop up the hot dogs and potatoes into bite size pieces add the Cheddar soup (this is the yummy gravy) and put into casserole dish.

You place the caserole into oven, guessing 350 degrees and this is where the dish could be served one of two ways - hotdogs cooked properly and raw potatoes, or cooked potatoes and shrivelled up hotdogs.

Either way = yucky.

The last dish my mom would make for us was considered by her to be healthy. Pay close attention to the ingredients or you'll miss the healthy ingredient. The dish - Cod Fish Casserole. Prep time, guessing 5 minutes. Cook time, who knows or cares because it was vile.

Combine cans of canned cod fish with cooked box mashed potatoes. Put into casserole dish and sprinkle wheat germ on top for crunch, color and because it is good for you.

Good Eating!

Oh, wow. I was more of a grilled cheese girl, myself. Although my mom did make "Egg-in-the-hole", which I love and still make now that I'm all growed up: Cut a circle out of a piece of bread and fry it with an egg in the whole. Just enough so that you can still break the yolk and soak it all up with the bread. Mmmmm... I might need some brinner tonight!

LiLu - I HATED these dishes. I hope I didn't lead you down the path to thinking I have absolutely no ability to know yummy food.

Egg in the Hole is aka "French Egg" by my hubby. He is the weekend breakfast chef and has made for me. Yummy....
