Going from Calm to Crazy Panic in 20 Seconds....

Friday, June 12, 2009....

I bet you didn't think it could be done, but I did it. Woo Hoo! Not.

Today, I was to have my breast MRI and I'm claustrophobic. My sister had booked it for me and when I asked if I'd be enclosed, she said ah no...only your legs and feet are in the machine.

For normal people, going in head first is stressful, for a claustrophobic going in either way is still a NIGHTMARE.

Before the procedure started, I was informed that I would be fully in the machine and I believe the look on my face said it all. No Valium. No Xanax. I was to do this cold turkey.

The tech suggested we try getting me in the machine first before injecting me.

They slowly slide me in, face down, breathing heavy, breaking out into sweat.

By the time they reached my knees, I was CRYING. Not a whimper, but full blown crying.

They slide me out in seconds, but I was paralyzed, eyes shut, still crying.

It took several minutes before I opened my eyes. It was vehemently decided that I would not be doing that again (well, I'd consider if given a local, but don't think insurance would pay for an anesthesiologist).

As I left, I went by my sister's office and left her a note: There are not enough drugs in the world that can convince me to do that again.

Hope your Friday was more fun.

Oh, that is a terrible reaction! I agree with the xanax solution! My DH has the same reaction as you, the whole crying thing and all~

I am so sorry you had to go through that. There is no way they should make us do those things wtihout the help of some Valium, or soemthing. I totally get that feeling. Been there. Done that. No fun. Feel better!

what a horrible experience. I had an MRI once and it was frightening. I can't imagine being claustrophobic and trying it.

Missy: I've used Valium for other MRIs and have only had initial panic, but the additional devices needed really trapped you in place. Anesthesia would be only way.

BarbiePhobia: I'm glad I got out of there in one piece.

Heather: Thanks. Hope to have better weekend, but nursing very sick hubby. Poor guy.

Wild Boomba: Thanks and I hope everything is well with your family.

OP: Definitely not fun. Thanks for the kind words.

Oh, hon, I am SO sorry... I hate when people don't believe you or think you're just being a hypochondriac! NO, REALLY... trust me on this, doctors. Like my freaking root canal- I TOLD her I would need FOUR TIMES the regular amount of novacaine. Did she listen? No. Did I feel it? YES. Argh!

OMG LMB! What a horrible experience for you but glad that yo got through it. Please tell me that you went home and had copious cocktails - because after that experience, you deserve it!

LMB, I too had an MRI a few months ago and HATED IT.....my report came back fine, but they are suggesting another one in a year...NO WAY...I mean, WTF, I'm not doing mammo, ultrasound and MRI...to me that's overkill. When will you get your results?

LiLu: Maybe if your dentist knocked me out, the MRI might have happened - NOT....

Miss Rambles: Thanks for the hugs.

Sunshine Meg: Last weekend was a wash, but planning on taking it easy this weekend. Just wish the sun would come out.

Miss Nobody: Horrible blogger and just picking up the award. Thanks again :-)

The Sorority: I went home. Drank. Listened to husband tell me his temp every 20 minutes. I Drank more.

MP: No results on MRI. Referred to breast surgeon. Mammos came back clean, but b/c 2 sisters had breast cancer, they want to be extra careful. Don't know next steps, but it's NOT a closed MRI.

Helen: Thanks for the well wishes.
