0 to 100 in 10 Seconds Flat

Monday, December 14, 2009....

No this isn't a post about me driving around a racetrack (although that would be cool to do), but one about how my sister can push my buttons with 2 words: Gay Olympics.

Yes, every time she brings up the subject, it gets me spiraling on an out-of-control diatribe talking faster and faster about how stupid and wrong I think it is.

I understand the Special Olympics and am inspired by everyone involved, but the Gay Olympics just seems like a place for all participants who couldn't qualify for the Olympics to have a second shot.

Hello? Does anyone not remember Greg Louganis? He won gold medals and gay.

When I watch an event, I don't think he or she is great for a gay athletic. I think "wow, I'm a lazy shit watching this from my couch and why don't I go run a marathon" then I click the remote because I don't want to be depressed. But, did you notice I didn't once think wow, wonder what their sexuality is?

I understand being second choice. As a child who was not coordinated, I was not chosen first to be on any team, but I didn't go off and start my own league that only allowed little blond girls to participate (Yoga Girl, I am aware of the fact that my hair is very dark today, but when little it was blond)

Is it just me? Does this not bother one other person out there? Will people who didn't make it to the real Olympics now fake their sexuality to participate in the Gay Olympics? What if you're bi-sexual? Are you not allowed to participate in the Gay Olympics?

See where I'm going (okay, maybe I'm like a train going off my tracks)....

Dang that Yoga Girl, she managed to get me worked up writing this post.

I wasn't aware that there is such a thing. It seems a little silly to me.

There's a gay olympics?? I honestly don't think it's necessary either. Special Olympics I can completely understand & I think that's fantastic that they give people a shot regardless of physical disabilities, but a whole olympics because your gay? o.O I thought anyone could enter the Olympics? I highly doubt there is a box on the application that says Gay or Straight. hmmm....I think this is overboard too, because the olympics is not segrated in anyway against sexual orientation.

Drew said...

Um...Totally unnecessary.
What a silly idea since there have been gay athletes in the olympics and it's about ability not race, color, religion or sexual orientation.

only when we establish our labels to seperate us...it does not surprise me, but i can think of a few friends of that lifestyle who would be sick of it themselves.

Hey, you forgot my favorite variants to not watch - the overweight Olympics (I qualify for this one) and the common-sense impaired Olympics.

In the overweight Olympics, the pentathlon features channel surfing, couch sitting, potato chip snarfing, the 10 meter stroll, and the standing back stretch.

The common-sense impaired Olympics has never been held since by definition, only those that jump off a tall building qualify, but the jump is inevitably fatal. Oh well.

I suspect that it all goes to the desire of people to be the "best". Pick a few enough members or people interested in proclaiming membership and you too can be the "best". So the more selective the group, the better your chances - no matter who thinks it is bogus. In some senses, I think Gay may not be selective enough.

Gay olympics? Didn't know there was such a thing. I agree unecessary since ability has nothing to do with sexual orientation.

I believe it, there seems to be an event for just about anything or anyone out there. Go easy on Yoga Girl, I'm sure she didn't mean to push your buttons.

What?!?!?! I had no idea there was such a thing. What in the world does being gay have to do with sports? It isn't a handicap for heaven's sake! If I was gay I certainly wouldn't participate. I would want to be in the regular olympics thank you :)

I'm speechless. That's not like me...
I didn't know about it before your post.
(shaking my head)

Really?

Really?

I just don't see a need. What does sexual preference have to do with athleticism?

Nada.
Nothing.
Zilch.

Special Olympics...totally different situation & a fabulous event. Heartwarming & chock full of love more than anything.

Are they really going to do that? Totally agree. Not necessary at all.

I think they should make Olympics for the uncoordinated. I bet I could win.

I've never heard of it but I totally agree with you.

I so agree with you. Why the hell should gay people get their own anything. You're still human beings aren't you, get in line like the rest of us and stop being precious.

Miss Yvonne said...

Would they add new events to the Gay Olympics? Like 100 meter high heeled tranny dash?

Haahaaha, just kidding! The current Olympics are gay enough as it is. Did someone say figure skating???

Hahaaa, kidding again!

Kind of.

I understand where you are coming from. Being gay is not a disability!

I didn't know about such a thing either.

Yoga Girl checking in....LMAO, which is a good thing because it's 8:24 p.m. and I am still working. So I needed a good laugh here. I did a little research - it is actually known as the Gay Games (www.gaygames.com). In 2010 they will be held in Cologne, Germany, and in 2014, LMB will love this - in Cleveland, OH.

And please let Maria know that of course I brought it up on purpose since I love it when you go off on this subject.

For the record for all the readers of this blog, I agree with LMB but I just don't care enough to go on about it. LMB, however - it is a surefire way to get her wound up for oh, a good 20 minutes or so.

Oh man, just reading the phrase Gay Olympics brought my blood to a gentle simmer. I mean, after I stopped laughing and had the sobering realization that holy mother of pete, people seriously think this might be a good idea.

Also, can you imagine the uproar if there were a Black Olympics. Oh man. Oh man. This idea is just so backwards.

i guess everyone wants a little something to call their own.

when i lived in DC, one of my favorite times of year was the drag races. you know, a bunch of men in dresses and heels racing around dupont circle.

it was awesome

Are you sure she just isn't referring to anything indoors on ice at the Winter Olympics?

Seriously, I'm a big ditto on Brian's comment. No need to repeat.

Herding Cats said...

Is this a serious event? If it isn't, fine....kind of funny and okay. If it is....wtf? Participate in the real Olympics why don't ya?

Gay Olympics? Really? Thats not some kind of mad up internet urban myth? Bonkers! Well like disabled people, we all know the gays are terrible at sports. I expect the 100m will be a full on mince. They'd never stand a chance with normals!!! /sarcasm

I love the tags on this post by the way!

Kys – Yes there is. Yes, I think it silly as well.

Melanie’s Randomness – Exactly…I’ve never heard of a coach saying, “well, let’s Johnson because he’s gay so he’ll run faster”.

BakerGirl – That’s the beauty of the Olympics, it’s based upon talent ….and sometimes, drug enhancements…..but, that’s a completely different target.

Brian Miller – I can think of a few friends of that life style who would too. You’re right. It only separates people more.

Dan – Okay, loved your comment. Loved the concept of the common sense Olympics and why it couldn’t exist.

Goose –Someone would definitely have to show me the proof before I thought about changing my mind.

Maria.palermo – I emailed you and even Yoga Girl wrote later, no way – she purposely does this to me. I think she needs to grow up.

DSS – I agree. Wouldn’t everyone know that you joined the Gay Olympics because you couldn’t make the grade.

Green-Eyed Momster – LOL….

Actual Scale – I agree and can’t believe it’s gotten any buy in.

Sunshine Mama – Oh, it’s already being done.

Jules – LOL. I don’t know, I may give you a run for the money.

Peach Tart – Thank you. It’s nice to know I’m not alone.

Jewels Diva – LOL…love the “stop being precious” part of this comment.

Miss Yvonne – My friend mentioned the figure skating portion to me as well. Someone else did say they’d have the best designed uniforms.

Otin - Last I knew it wasn’t. If it is, then add people who are directionally challenged or rude people to the list.

Matty – Isn’t great I can educate you today.

DB – You’re just cruel. I just wish I could remember what subject gets you going.

Notthatkindofgirlblog – I guess they thought it a good idea and ran with it. You’re right about creating a racially separated Olympics. Imagine all the events we’d miss if the Olympics were racially separated. …Just thinking about the participants for the ribbon running sport (name escapes me).

Jaime – That is so completely different…and must have been hysterical and I bet some may have even been straight.

Monkey Man – LOL. What are you saying, Scott Hamilton is straight?

Herding Cats – Nope, it’s serious.

Alex – It’s not made up and my sister found the link for it www.gaygames.com . I love when people read the taglines. Sometimes, I hide an interesting message in them that have nothing to do with the post.

Jane – LOL. Hey, next year’s is in Germany. You could hop over from Spain and watch and report back to us.

the irony is that yoga girl should give you Zen like feelings..yes? :)

I know very little about the G.O...but hope that you have one Olympics for all athletes regardless of orientation, color, sex, race. And Special Olympics which are truly inspiring.

Badass Geek said...

If they are going to start a gay Olympics, then they should rename the original Olympics to "Straight Olympics".

Claudya Martinez said...

It bothers me because I believe gay people should not be treated differently.

OMG I totally agree with you wtf does their sexual bent have to do with anything!!!!! I am so sick of gay rights... it's a non issue!!
