Question of the Week.....

Thursday, December 3, 2009.....

I've decided to make Thursdays my "Question of the Week" day because I always have questions and am always interested in people's answers.

Today's Question: Would You Rather Have Fame, Fortune or Power?

Over the years, I've been asked this question many times and I've always had the same answer. I thought it apropos to raise this question with the media coverage in the U.S. regarding Tiger Woods and the White House party crashers.

Power: I've been fortunate to have worked with some great people who I watched change before my eyes once their status and power increased. In my opinion, they couldn't handle the power given to them and they eventually fell off the pedestal and became humbled by the experience.

However, during their rise, I witnessed the change in personalities -- the selling out of their beliefs and the lies. It was quite sad to watch and I no longer respected these individuals, but pitied them.

So for me, Power is out!

Fame: I know many individuals would want to be recognized on the street and to have people want to be near them. It's nice to be recognized for one's accomplishments and I admit, I love having followers (I consider this a form of recognition), but do I want every high or low point of my life to be over inflated by the media? Do I need people knowing I had a Mocha Latte at Starbucks. I think not. Why? Because I'm just an average person and would be bored watching or reading about me 24/7.

So for me, Fame is out!

Fortune: Yup. That's the one for me. Having money would give me the opportunity to help others behind the scenes without the spotlight. It would also allow me the opportunity to own a home with adequate storage for all my cooking stuff :-).

So, what would you want? Fame like a famous athletic, author or movie star? Power like the leader of a country; or Fortune to allow you to spend at will without a care in the world?

I think I'd take fortune. You could do so much good, or harm, with it. I hope I'd do good.

Fortune makes up for so much else. Besides, Power and Fame don't put bacon on the table. {*grin*}

Fortune works indeed...with fortune, you can have fame and power...i.e. Paris Hilton...hehehehe

Seems to me like fortune would bring you power and fame. I mean, there are a lot of people these days who are considered celebrities just because they have tons of money.

Jumping in on the FORTUNE bandwagon...

I would hope that my fortune would not bring fame, but some sort of power. The power to help others, to enrich our youth's minds and to make the future better for my children/grandchildren!

Great question!!! Thanks for asking...

fortune.

and with that fortune I'd:

• buy a house with a shoe closet that's a separate room and a kitchen that would make any pro chef drool
• here's a surprise: quit my day job
• pay someone to movivate me to write my novel

and with my novel written, i'd achieve fame.

see how nicely that works out?

That's too easy - Fortune. That's why lotteries do so freaking well.

I think the terms are not mutually exclusive. I guess I'd go with power because if I wanted it to, it could lead to the other two.

I think I'd take fortune when all's said and done. I'm not interested in fame or power, just the power to live the way I want to and fortune would help with that. Plus I could donate to animal charities more and pay for my mom's mortgage. And buy lots of cake. :)

Fame and power are overrated!

I choose Fortune as well. I once went to a Comic Book convetion dressed as harley quinn. So many people asked me for pictures I went nuts. I changed my outfit. I couldn't pick the fame. Power would be wayyy tooo stressful.

This is a cute idea! I like it!

I'd love to have enough money to be able to take care of myself and to support the causes I hold dear!

Hi, I would take fortune, like you, you can help people out! I would love to that on a grand stand! Like Ellen or Oprah!!

This is an interesting question. I think I'll pose it too my 7/8 graders today. As for me, I'm a part-time teacher so I would take fortune. Power and fame are too intimidating to me!

I agree with your reasoning. Fortune all the way baby.

I've always wanted to be a rich nobody. Just some random rich person that no one gives a crap about. Kind of like the owner of a snowglobe company of some sort. Is that too much to ask?

Hard to decide, if you believe that you have good judgment, then power is an option,

Definitely fortune. I think that buys power AND fame...Hello? Paris Hilton?

Mike said...

Oh, fortune, most definitely! Although, power kind of falls into place if you have enough fortune.

I completely agree with you! I would choose fame, but not for the material things. It would make helping others so much easier.

I'm for fortune, too. I really have no desire for fame or power. But I could probably find something to spend lots of money on! hehe

Kimberly said...

Power...with that comes fortune. I could live without fame.

Fortune for sure!

Hugs!!

P.S. I hope your appointment goes well tomorrow! Hope the docs are able to give you some relief for your ears!

I would take fortune because I wouldn't want a lot of attention drawn to me with fame and I'm not sure about power either. And then I would keep what I needed with the fortune to live comfortably but not extravagantly and then donate the rest to charity!

loved the concept of the question a week theme :)

Fortune most definitely.

If you could really have the fortune without the responsibility that comes with power, absolutely!! I never understood people who wanted to be famous...I would take my privacy any day over being famous! Good question!

Definitely fortune is my choice. Interesting question. Thank you.

Debbie – Exactly.

Dan – Very true.

Organic Meatbag – ahhh..but, I was making them mutually exclusive. Besides, Paris Hilton doesn’t have that much power, I wouldn’t invite her over for dinner.

Badass Geek – There are also many quiet wealthy individuals that’d you never guess have the $$$.

Leslee – With fortune you could make something possible by funding it, but you’d have to give up the power to run it (my question was making each mutually exclusive)

Kk – I’m surprised. I thought you’d want to be a famous author first. Although I’d build the dream house with the kitchen and enough bookcases for my cookbooks.

Esmerelda – I love Power Ball and play even though I know no one in the NE will ever win.

The Vegetable Assassin – Exactly and cake sounds yummy.

Melanie’s Randomness – I could see that. It’s nice to hear a compliment or get noticed by a few people, but when it becomes noticeable, it’s almost a bit scary.

CatLadyLarew – That would be wonderful.

Deborah – I would too, but if no publicity or power – I’d just love to fund a project with great people running the program.

Herding Cats – I’d be curious what they’d say. I wonder if most would say “fame” because of their age.

Goose – Thanks.

Ice Queen – Who doesn’t love a snowglobe? Let’s hear it for the rich nobody – YAY..

Ji - You’d have to know yourself very well not to be intoxicated by it and stay true to yourself.

Jules – You and Organic Meatbag….Paris who?

Otin – but the question was mutually exclusive and I could easily give up power for $$.

New England Girl – Fortune would definitely help others

Barb – LOL…

Kimberly – Ahhh…but my question only lets you pick one.

Green-Eyed Momster – I didn’t see that coming – LOL.

That corgi – Exactly. Sometimes you miss true happiness with having too much stuff.

Candice – Smart woman!

Erin P – Yup- fortune without the responsibility of power. I have no real desire to run a Fortune 500 company.

Joanna Jenkins - I couldn’t agree more.

Miss Nobody – Okay, that is very funny. I thought about the i-phone, but realized, I’d get too sucked in.

You spell it all out so well. I'd take the fortune, anonymously. I wouldn't want anyone to know I had money.

Fortune. I would pay off all my debts. Sock away some cash for the kids' college and get the hell out of dodge.

Jaime said...

I'd go with fame. because with fame comes fortune and power. so i'd actually end up with all 3!

leave it to a lawyer to find the loop hole in the question.
