In a little over 3 months, I'll be participating in my first sprint triathlon with 2 of my sisters in New Jersey.
Each of us is taking a leg of the race and mine is running. YogaGirl has the swimming portion and Science Sister has the biking portion.
YogaGirl and I aren't worried about Science Sister because she's always participating in some sort of road race that involves running, biking or her own sprint triathlon. However, YogaGirl and I have some concerns...so we set goals for ourselves and I'd like to share them with you.
YogaGirl's goal is not to drown (or get eaten by a shark). We both grew up spending 90% of our time as kids in the water so I don't think she'll be drowning. However, I do laugh when she goes to the Y to train and can't because the pool is closed because of an outside storm. Apparently, the facility closes the pool during and up to 1/2 hour after a storm due to lightning. I find this a very bizarre thing since the pool is indoors.
My goal, well, it is much simpler. I call my training the Gary Coleman Project. No disrespect to the actor, but when I heard the news about his death it was as follows: Day 1 Gary Coleman fell and is in ICU. Day 2 Gary Coleman is dead.
I heard nothing of the particulars and know that I'm grace-in-motion and falling/tripping is something I do often.
I told YogaGirl that getting my ass on the treadmill, walking, walking, slow jog, jog, walking, walking was the only way I was going to build coordination and avoid the Gary Coleman tragedy.
Have YogaGirl and I shared our fears with Science Sister - no. Do you think she'll laugh at us - YES. She may even mock our insane fears. But the nice thing is to have one sibling who also shares the same type of insane fears with you.

I think that both of you will do fine and I have great confidence that neither of you will either drown or pull a Coleman. That's so cool that you are each taking on a leg of the race!
I'd be all in for the biking portion. The swimming would kill me for sure.
smiles. you could actually try to practice falling with grace...just in case you know. smiles.
i am sure you will do marvelously...
I'm proud of you!
Good luck with your training! My goal is to run a 5K sometime this fall. I have a lot of work to do! LOL
Good luck to all of you on the big triathlon and especially to you on your run! I laughed at the Gary Coleman thing. I feel kinda bad about it but that is just hilarious! :-)
Dan is correct about his lightening explantion.
I myself am not coordinated enough to do anything on a treadmill other than walk. I tried to run once and almost fell. I had visions of my shoe lace getting sucked into the machine and getting myself killed. I am pretty confident that I could run on pavement - if someone mean was chasing me.
Well my goodness if on Day 1 he falls and Day 2 he dies, OF COURSE you have every reason to fear for your own safety. I know I would. Good luck!
I've been swimming since I was 7...that's almost 39 years. And I'm deathly afraid of drowning. So yeah, I can understand your fear.
Good luck to you all!
Actually the nicest thing is having sisters!! And to want to do something so fun together is the ultimate.
I think you will do great. Very impressed.
good luck. i'm sure you guys will all come through it just fine!
So basically your goal is to live? I can get behind that!
A slight correction for your readers - #1 goal - not to drown. #2 goal - to not be the last one out of the water. Second to last is fine - just don't let me be the last slack ass in the water. And of course, as always, #3 - do not want to be snack food for sharks. Because you know, there have been shark sightings here in NJ.
BTW, like the Science Sister pseudonym. Hoping she is reading this again.
Congrats, My Dear!
The running leg will be amazing! I'm so excited for you! What a great way to spend a summer!
Hope you are well!
Erin
I think both LMS and Yoga Girl will do fine. I admit that the water part is my most intimidating and I have come out last on more than one occasion. Both of them will do fine.
Salt – Thanks for the vote of confidence!
Brian – Thank you Brian. I actually did fall face first when I was training for my marathon in 2001. My partner was nervous I was hurt because I wasn’t getting up, but it was mile 22 and I just needed a break.
Dan – but up to a ½ hour after the storm?
Persians & Pulitzer – That’s what I’ll be doing, but I think it may be a combo of walk and jog.
Tasha – Don’t worry, I laughed at the initial reports because it was so random – thought of the toy I had as a kid “weebles wobble but they don’t fall down”.
The Bumbles – Oh…the shoelace in the treadmill could be a reality – thanks. Thanks for planting that visualization in my head.
Nanny Goats – I’m glad someone understands my fear!
J.J. – thank you and I hope she doesn’t drown.
PHST – I think it would be cake for you after seeing that hill/mountain thingy you conquered.
Jaime – thanks.
BV – Yes it is!
DB – I think you’d be perfect snack food for sharks
Living & Loving – this would be just a warmup for you.
Adele – sure, easy for you to say…you’ve done this a ZILLION times already!
