I'm Mad at the Canadians

Tuesday, July 28, 2009....

Why? Curling.

Last week, I was watching Hell's Kitchen and the grand prize is to be the chef at some fancy resort (name escapes me) in Canada where the 2010 Winter Olympics will be held.

During the last Winter Olympics, Curling was introduced into the mix of events and this is all I heard from my sister -- "I can win a medal, how hard is Curling?"

Everyday, several times a day, the conversation would revert back to her being a gold medalist. Here's the rub, she's never played and she has already won the medal in her mind.

I can only imagine the coverage Curling will get as the 2010 Winter Olympics will be held in Canada. For me, this means I will be hearing SEVERAL thousand times how she could do this, how she'd win, blah, blah, blah...

After the last Winter Olympics, it was agreed upon that the only way she'd could go on-and-on about her imaginary Olympic win is to play it. Otherwise, not one peep.

Recently, she met a woman in one of her golf leagues (yeah, you can do that if single with no kids - wait, I have no kids, but don't have the patience) who is on a Curling team in NJ. It starts up in October which is right after golf season and before ski season. I could be screwed.

She could actually go to the rink, sweep it and then have free rein to call and torture me for 17 days. I envision conversations about her winning the medals, what outfits she'd wear and wondering if her hair would hold up in the rink.

However, these conversations are all secondary to the constant statement I'll hear for 17 days straight "Ya know LMB, I could do this. I could be in the Olympics and win a medal".

Damn You Canadians!

I've always thought curling looked pretty easy, too. Right up there with ribbon dancing but you don't even need grace for curling.

Sorry.

my realtor in Boston was into curling...both her AND her husband did it for fun.

(I question their definition of "fun")

Well it would be cool for your sis if she wins but I hope doesn't torture you for 17 days!

Thanks for the follow!

Curling is another one of those great sports/not-sports like golf. It looks deceptively easy when the good ones do it and down right hard when I do it.

Enjoy being related to the famous curler!

I like your writing style (and the fact that we have a mutual disdain for Canadian- haha, so kidding,) and we're both food enthusiasts - half my family are from the great white north, so I can appreciate a good curling "tale."

xoxox,
noelle

Thanks for stopping by my blog!

DB - no way. I know you won't.

Lacochran - totally forgot about ribbon dancing, but I think the max age is 12 and max height for that is 4'9". Personally, I would want to run off mats and flick people in face with ribbon.

Otin - paint drying

inkOBSESSION - you laugh, can I have your # so she can call you this February

kk - I think curling could be way fun after several drinks - oh wait, I think it wouldn't be curling, but who is going to be able to stand up on the ice the longest.

girl inspired - it would be great if she won. It would mean she was on the team and not able to call me constantly. Alas, she's a spectator and able to speed dial me.

Kym - I do love Canadians and should since I'm French Canadian.

I did watch HK and wonder if the weirdo guy at the beginning was in prison. He had this fear of being someone's bitch.

Dan - Oh I hope so. She might realize that and stop the chant.

Noelle - I do love the Canadians. Curling mystifies me. A broom, ice, rock and freezing your butt off - why?

Totally loved your pics...

LMB - I swear to God curling came about so that in the winter you would have somewhere cold to put your beer when you were sweeping snow off the sidewalk! (HA!) Also, when you are frozen for a large part of the year you will do just about anything for entertainment.

Curling really is secondary to the drinking that happens while you curl. This maybe why I never got any good at the game.

I LOVE curling; once you understand the game, it's really addicting. It's not nearly as easy to be good as it looks, much like golf. You are safe for 2010 - the Olympic team has already been chosen. Tell your sister I look forward to kicking her butt in the next Olympic Trials.

Sorority - That is exactly why I thought Curling was invented. Why else?

kimra - my sister believes she'll beat you for the next spot.

You should buy some bulk "gold medals" from Oriental Trading, and give them to your sister at just the right times in your life.... and say "here's your gold medal CHAMP." Hmmmmm not a BAD idea I may do this in my real life....

ModernMom - ABSOLUTELY!

La La - My sister read your comment and is wondering when I'll be getting her some...

hmmm...what is this curling thing? I've never heard of it. I wonder if it's something I can do? I would like to win a medal in SOMETHING and obviously it's not going to happen with running.
